Micah Desforges, the head of Tribu, the company that owns Jackalope, decided to pull the plug on Saturday’s events and hold everything over until Sunday morning.

“I thought it would be better err on the side of caution.  It wasn’t easy to make the call to postpone – the skaters were super excited to participate,” Desforges said.  “I didn’t wait too long before I made the call because I didn’t want to risk the chance of anyone getting hurt.  In the end, it was the right call to make.  Besides, we had a great after party at Beachside Social in Virginia Beach.”

The weather forecast is clear for Sunday.  The first base jumper took a practice jump at 10:30 am EDT.  The jumper landed in the target zone without any problems.  There was a slight wind but nothing too gnarly.

The base jumping competition will conclude today and last for at least three hours.

Yesterday, we were only able to have a few competitors in the men’s open Semi-Finals.  The action will pick up later today at 12:45 PM EDT as we continue with the men’s open competition.

The women’s Vertical Ramp competition will be held today.  The women’s vert will start at 3:30 pm EDT.

Nina Ye, one of the top contenders to win the Women’s Vertical competition stopped by our media booth and told us what she has been up to.

“Last year, I participated in the Vertical Ramp in Mississauga.  I got fourth place and was super stoked,” Ye said.

Ye is a fifteen-year-old from Oceanside, California.  This is her first time skating in the Virginia Beach competition.  She said, “Virginia Beach reminds me of home because of the ocean and sand.”

I asked Ye what she has been working on recently.

“I have been working on my Judo 540’s a lot.  I’m really excited about this trick.

The Jackalope Festival and Block Parties are becoming more popular while attracting the younger skaters who hope to compete on the world stage.  One of the principal ideas behind Jackalope is the idea that community and skate culture unite people from all different backgrounds.

In 2026, Jackalope will hold their first Block Party in Ventura, California.  Ventura is located just north of Los Angeles and is a hotbed of skate culture.  I met two Ventura city officials while watching Jackalope who said,

“You know, skateboarding is embedded in the Ventura’s DNA.  Our vision is to make Ventura a healthy sport destination city.  Jackalope is a community oriented event and it fits perfectly with the big city but small town vibe of downtown Ventura. Our businesses love it too,” the city officials said.

Today, we will conclude the final live competion for the men’s and women’s vertical competition and the street course.  Watch the live stream here on 3rdstreet.tv by clicking on the link below.

The live stream starts at 12:15 PM EDT.

Rincon Classic History

The event where legends are made, The Rincon Classic is the oldest and most revered surfing contest in Santa Barbara’s rich surfing history. Showcasing generations of the areas best surfers at the Queen of the coast, the Classic is a locals only event, serving as a community gathering each winter. To guarantee optimal conditions the Classic has a six week waiting period from the originally scheduled date. Over it’s 43 year history the event has showcased such house hold names as Tom Curren, Bobby Martinez, Chris Brown, Kim Mearig, Davey Smith and Dane Reynolds to up and coming stars, Lakey Peterson, Conner and Parker Coffin, Demi Boelsterli and Kilian Garland. For every known name there are a handful of underground rippers that will always own the line up at Rincon.

Founded in 1979 by Roger Nance, Jeff White, and a crew of local surfers, the Rincon Classic ran for 17 consecutive years before falling dormant in 1996. In 2001 the event was resurrected by Chris Keet and the Surf Happens crew to continue the legacy. Under the tutiledge of this generation the event has grown exponentially and now involves the community in grass-roots fundraising efforts.

2025 marks the 43th Annual Rincon Classic and the 25th year the event will be produced by Surf Happens Surf School. It is with great honor that we continue to run the Rincon Classic tradition for our community and we appreciate your support!

Watch the Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) live telethon to help people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires https://3rdstreet.tv/watch-the-community-organized-relief-effort-core-live-telethon-to-help-people-affected-by-the-los-angeles-wildfires/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 18:47:45 +0000 https://3rdstreet.tv/?p=2184 SANTA MONICA – On the morning of January 7th, 2025, the Santa Ana winds blew forcefully across Southern California. While the residents in the area were aware of the potential for fire, nobody could have predicted the ferocity of the fire caused by the winds.

At approximately 11:00 am that morning, the fire began in the coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades. According to the Washington Post, the winds reached 90 MPH. Within hours the fire had consumed 10,000 acres and burned hundreds of homes. As the fire burnt overnight, the burn area would encompass more than 20,000 acres. The fire consumed and demolished an estimated 1,200 homes and commercial businesses and has caused an estimated U$D 250 billion in damage.

Several hours after the Pacific Palisades fire ignited, another firestorm erupted in Eaton, California – an incorporated city near Pasadena. This fire burnt overnight and more than 100,000 people were under orders to evacuate.

Fire Departments across California joined together and fought the blazes. According to Mayor Karen Bass’ office, as of today, the fire in Pacific Palisades is 75% contained and the Eaton fire is 95% contained.

But, the damage will be felt for years to come as government officials grapple with the loss of life, the displacement of 10’s of thousands of people, the financial loss, and the environmental impact.

CORE, Community Organized Relief Effort, will hold a live telethon today beginning at 9:00 am PDT. CORE, an non-profit organization has already raised over U$D 1 million that will be used to benefit impacted people and first responders, including the Los Angeles Fire Department and The California Fire Foundation.

So many people have been impacted by this tragedy. That is why actors, such as Josh Brolin and Internet talent and gamer, Jacksepticeye, have donated both time and money to help those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.
