Micah Desforges, the head of Tribu, the company that owns Jackalope, decided to pull the plug on Saturday’s events and hold everything over until Sunday morning.

“I thought it would be better err on the side of caution.  It wasn’t easy to make the call to postpone – the skaters were super excited to participate,” Desforges said.  “I didn’t wait too long before I made the call because I didn’t want to risk the chance of anyone getting hurt.  In the end, it was the right call to make.  Besides, we had a great after party at Beachside Social in Virginia Beach.”

The weather forecast is clear for Sunday.  The first base jumper took a practice jump at 10:30 am EDT.  The jumper landed in the target zone without any problems.  There was a slight wind but nothing too gnarly.

The base jumping competition will conclude today and last for at least three hours.

Yesterday, we were only able to have a few competitors in the men’s open Semi-Finals.  The action will pick up later today at 12:45 PM EDT as we continue with the men’s open competition.

The women’s Vertical Ramp competition will be held today.  The women’s vert will start at 3:30 pm EDT.

Nina Ye, one of the top contenders to win the Women’s Vertical competition stopped by our media booth and told us what she has been up to.

“Last year, I participated in the Vertical Ramp in Mississauga.  I got fourth place and was super stoked,” Ye said.

Ye is a fifteen-year-old from Oceanside, California.  This is her first time skating in the Virginia Beach competition.  She said, “Virginia Beach reminds me of home because of the ocean and sand.”

I asked Ye what she has been working on recently.

“I have been working on my Judo 540’s a lot.  I’m really excited about this trick.

The Jackalope Festival and Block Parties are becoming more popular while attracting the younger skaters who hope to compete on the world stage.  One of the principal ideas behind Jackalope is the idea that community and skate culture unite people from all different backgrounds.

In 2026, Jackalope will hold their first Block Party in Ventura, California.  Ventura is located just north of Los Angeles and is a hotbed of skate culture.  I met two Ventura city officials while watching Jackalope who said,

“You know, skateboarding is embedded in the Ventura’s DNA.  Our vision is to make Ventura a healthy sport destination city.  Jackalope is a community oriented event and it fits perfectly with the big city but small town vibe of downtown Ventura. Our businesses love it too,” the city officials said.

Today, we will conclude the final live competion for the men’s and women’s vertical competition and the street course.  Watch the live stream here on 3rdstreet.tv by clicking on the link below.

The live stream starts at 12:15 PM EDT.

What to bring on a hike in Santa Monica https://3rdstreet.tv/what-to-bring-on-a-hike-in-santa-monica/ Tue, 03 Jul 2018 07:11:24 +0000 http://www.3rdstreet.tv/?p=1551 SANTA MONICA — Hiking can be a great experience and way to get out, but the activity can be very dangerous. Before you head out hiking in Santa Monica, make sure you are packed for the day with our quick checklist of some important reminders:

WATER

The most important part of any hike and one that people often over look is water. You can never have enough water, and if you are thinking about leaving a bottle at home instead of taking it, don’t. When hiking its a good idea to invest in a Hydration Pack. There are a variety of companies that make the backpacks from CamelBak to Katla Volcano. The packs tend to keep hikers more hydrated with the constant reminder that its with you and the easy access to use it.

After that, two or three water bottles hanging on your belt loop or the pack are there as a precaution. Your pack will run out and it’s nice to have the backup should that happen. A cooler of water in your car to refill your bottles when you get back will help prevent motion sickness as you get down the mountain.

Once you have your water ready, its time to move on to clothing.

CLOTHES

Know thy enemy — or in a hiker’s case, the sun. In California, the sun brings on the heat and hiking at its peak hours can be terrible. Don’t make the heat worse by wearing the wrong clothing. If you start in the morning, it may be cold. If you feel the need to put pants on, make them a top layer. There are zip off pants that turn into shorts, sweats over shorts or lightweight hiking pants. As far as a shirt goes, you can pick from a variety of styles. From tank tops to a long sleeve performance shirt, a variety of cool options are available to hikers.

However, remember when hiking at night – bright is best.

LOCATION AND TIME

It may seem like a small detail, but letting people know where you are is probably one of the most important pieces of hiking. Whether you go with someone or not, you most likely won’t have a signal on the hike, meaning if something happens it’ll be a while before anyone knows something has happened. It’s good to let someone away from the hiking area know where you are going and when you’ll be gone. Don’t be late when you are coming back though. It’s important to be on time when you return so that should something ever go wrong people will know.

Santa Monica offers a wide variety of hiking options from beginner peaks to intense paths. Being prepared will make even the worst of heat and terrains more enjoyable. So pack your bag full of food and water to enjoy your day out exploring some of Santa Monica’s more rural landscapes.

Candytopia extends its run to late July https://3rdstreet.tv/candytopia-extends-its-run-to-late-july/ Mon, 25 Jun 2018 09:20:33 +0000 http://www.3rdstreet.tv/?p=1538 SANTA MONICA — Candytopia opens in Santa Monica and is such a sweet experience, it’s extending the run until July 22. TLC’s Candy Queen star, Jackie Sorkin, and sweets fabricator, Zac Hartog, debuted the interactive world of sweets in 2017 at LA Hangar Studios, and this year it’s back in Santa Monica, now, until late July.

The pop-up store offers those with a penchant for sweets a gastro journey that is also eye-catching.  Candytopia offers a variety of attractions such as the Museum of Ice Cream and Marshmallow Massive – a pool of sponges that look like marshmallows. However, the candy attraction is unlike anything else visitors can experience anywhere else.

Unlike Charlie at The Chocolate Factory, customers are encouraged to touch and interact with the displays.  However, eating the attractions that have installed features is against the rules. From sculptures to candy art, the event provides a dream world, in which candy aficionados and lovers can escape.

Patrons are encouraged to enjoy the exhibit and not worry about photos. While tons of selfie opportunities are provided, Candytopia offers free, high-quality images that will be emailed to you once you join the mailing list. However, cell phones and personal cameras are welcome with plenty of candy-related backgrounds provided.

The Gallery includes exhibits inspired by themes like Starry Night, Mona Lisa, and Willy Wonka’s candy factory. Tickets prices are $30 for an adult and $23 per child.  For more information visit www.candytopia.com.

Food, shopping, and museums – Santa Monica offers it all https://3rdstreet.tv/food-shopping-and-museums-santa-monica-offers-it-all/ Fri, 15 Jun 2018 06:42:46 +0000 http://www.3rdstreet.tv/?p=1531 SANTA MONICA — Known for its beaches, pier and workout areas, Santa Monica is an absolute destination for tourists visiting Southern California.  But, if you are looking for something to do other than relax, surf, play volleyball or splash in the ocean, Santa Monica has a lot to offer. For the gastronomically adventuresome and culture hounds, Santa Monica has classic museums, world-class restaurants, and a few local farmer’s markets.

FARMER’S MARKET

Local food products are a big deal in Santa Monica, and the city of Santa Monica loves to provide opportunities for locals to be able to sell their goods. Santa Monica hosts three farmer’s markets throughout the week for people to enjoy. On Wednesday, the market is hosted on Arizona Avenue and 3rd Street.  It opens at 8:30 a.m. and lasts until 1:30 p.m. The Saturday Farmer’s Market is on Arizona and 3rd street at the Promenade.  On Sunday, the market operates from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 pm in the parking lot at Main Street and Ocean Park.

The markets feature food from local restaurants, produce from farmers in SoCal, and farm-raised meats and poultry. From breakfast to lunch, vendors sell farm-fresh foods for market-goers to enjoy in the outdoor community. Locals enjoy shopping at the market and buying fresh fruits and vegetables.

MUSEUMS

There are several museums in Santa Monica.  If you are interested in history or art, you can easily find the perfect museum. If you are a history buff, be sure to check out the Museum of Flying at the Santa Monica Airport or the Santa Monica History Museum on 7th street. The Museum of Flying tells the beautiful history of aviation and the evolution of aircraft with a special exhibit on California’s Aviation Hall of Fame. Santa Monica History Museum features the history of the city itself. The main exhibit traces the history of Santa Monica, from the cities’ founding in 1875 up to the modern era

Other museums that you may also be interested in include California Heritage Museum and Wonders of the World. There are several major Museums just outside of Santa Monica as well.  The best known is the J. Paul Getty Museum , located just off the 405, and the little known but absolutely incredible Getty Villa located just up Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades. The J. Paul Getty Museum is one of the most critically acclaimed museums in the world and exhibits classic art from different eras including Etruscan, Greek, and Roman.  The Chinese and Japanese exhibits are also impressive.

SHOPPING AND DINING

If shopping, food, and street entertainment are what you are after, the Third Street Promenade is the place to be.  Local clothing designers hang on the racks in stores along the Promenade but there are also the common place stores like Banana Republic and Zara there as well.  There are many restaurants and dining options available if food is what you are after.  Grab a quick bowl of chili at Barney’s Beanery or treat yourself to Italian fare at Trastevere.  The best sushi on the West side is found at Sushi King on Wilshire.  Sushi King is not on the Promenade but worth the walk.

All-in-all, there are too many things to do in Santa Monica.  If none of the above excites, there is always the beach.  After all, isn’t that why you’re here?

Guide to enjoying Santa Monica beach https://3rdstreet.tv/guide-to-enjoying-santa-monica-beach/ Thu, 26 Apr 2018 16:58:19 +0000 http://www.3rdstreet.tv/?p=1420 SANTA MONICA — One of the best parts of living or visiting Santa Monica is the easy access to a number of nearby beaches, but going to the beach can be frustrating and messy when beach-goers neglect beach etiquette. Here’s our guide to making the beach a more enjoyable place for everyone.

TAKING CARE OF THE BEACH

A post shared by M. (@marisahdz) on

RESPECT EVERYONE

There a wide variety of people that go to the beach. From bikers to fishermen to sports teams, everyone comes out to enjoy the beautiful coastline of California. However, the variety of people and activities can sometimes create conflict on the beach. Understanding that things are going to happen and people aren’t going to be following the rules can make beach day less stressful when you learn to go with the flow. Just having common courtesy like not walking through people’s area can just make everyone’s day more enjoyable. The most important part of this is that bikers and skateboarders understand pedestrians always have the right away.

PICKING UP AFTER YOURSELF

The best part of the beach is being able to enjoy the sand between your toes and cooling off from the summer heat in the sweeping ocean breeze. The worst part is when you can’t enjoy those aspects of the beach because people neglect to clean up after themselves. Pick up the trash and mess you’ve made on the beach when you leave so you can enjoy the beach the next time you go.

LEASH YOUR DOG OR LEAVE HIM HOME

You love your dog. We understand. Who doesn’t love a dog? But unfortunately, there are a few people who do have a legitimate fear of dogs. Keeping your dog on a leash just keeps things safe for others and the dog even if you have the friendliest dog in the world, allowing you to reign him in when bikes and skateboards are flying past. Remember though, he can’t be on the beach but may enjoy it from a distance. He may enjoy the pier and boardwalk up close, but he is to remain out of the sand.

ENJOYING THE BEACH

A post shared by Carlos Raul (@carlos_raul_fisio) on

TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

You don’t get many days away from the office or out with your family, but you do manage to spend every minute of every day on your phone. It’s time to just turn it off and leave it behind in your car. Put your phone down and focus on the present. Enjoy the time with your family on the beach by talking to them and having some fun. Trade the phone for a sports ball and play a pick up game with the people you love.

BRING A FITTED SHEET

It’s annoying trying to keep your blankets mostly free of sand and clearly marked so others don’t walk through the area you’ve claimed. Bring a fitted sheet and fit it around objects like your cooler and bags. It not only cuts down the sand being dragged into your area, but it also allows to people to clearly know they shouldn’t walk over that area.

LEAVE THE SUBSTANCES AT HOME

It’s illegal to have most substances on most beaches to begin with, and even if you have a disregard for rules, the beach really isn’t the place for it. Beaches are full of families and little kids. If you want to smoke weed and drink at home, that’s great, but a public beach is not the place for it. Your discarded joints and open bottles could fall into the wrong little hands when you aren’t paying attention. Save it for home.
