Santa Monica hosts Culver City in the Ocean League Championship Game https://3rdstreet.tv/santa-monica-hosts-culver-city-in-the-ocean-league-championship-game/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 19:22:46 +0000 https://3rdstreet.tv/?p=2426 SANTA MONICA – (UPDATED – April 25, 2025). Santa Monica defeated the Culver City Centaurs in four sets on Wednesday winning the Ocean League Championship.

On Saturday, the CIF will announce the division they Santa Monica Vikings will play in. There has been some rumor that the Vikings will play in Division Two as they are rumored to be ranked 82nd in the state of California.

(ORIGINAL POST) After two weeks of Spring Break, boys high school volleyball picks up again as the Santa Monica Vikings host the Culver City Centaurs in the North Gym at SAMO High.

The Vikings recently returned from Hawaii where they played in the Clash of the Titans volleyball tournament hosted by Punahou High School.  The team finished with 1 – 3 record in their debut of that tournament.

Culver City and Santa Monica are the top two teams in the Ocean League.  When the two teams last met, Santa Monica took all three sets to win the game despite a valiant effort by Culver City.

Regardless of who wins tonight’s game, both teams will advance to the next round of games hosted by the California Interscholastic Federations, otherwise known as the CIF.

Last night, the Vikings played against Lawndale High School.  The SAMO team make quick work of the game and handily won all three sets.   While each player saw court time, left-handed hitter Abel, was notable because of the several kills he made during the game. This player puts a nice angle on the ball and has a power arm. Leo showed up to play as well with several notable blocks and kills to help SAMO slide past the Lawndale team.

The Culver City team played on Tuesday as well.  The Centaurs defeated Leuzinger in three sets.  The Culver City team will come into tonight’s match after a three game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to tonight’s game as many of the players are friends with one another from other club teams.  Indeed, some of the players come together on the beach and play in the California Beach Volleyball Association, CBVA, games that just recently started and will continue throughout the summer.

Tonight’s game begins at 3:30 PM PDT.  You can watch the live stream below on 3rdstreet.tv.

3rdstreet.tv would like to thank all families, band members, coaching staff, and all the volunteers who made this season possible. LET’S GO SAMO!

Santa Monica looking to close out the Clash of the Titan tournament with a win over Punahou 1AA https://3rdstreet.tv/santa-monica-looking-to-close-out-the-clash-of-the-titan-tournament-with-a-win-over-punahou-1aa/ Sun, 20 Apr 2025 02:05:19 +0000 https://3rdstreet.tv/?p=2399 SANTA MONICA & HONOLULU, HI – The Vikings will leave the shores of Hawaii tomorrow and head back to the Mainland.

But, before they go, they are looking for a chance at redemption after three straight defeats over the past two days. Yesterday, SAMO fell to Chatsworth despite beating them during the pre-season. Then, the team fell to Mililani High School in three straight sets. And finally, the Punahou team, the favored team in the tournament, defeated SAMO, again in three sets.

Earlier this week, the Vikings played two warm-up games and won both. One of those games was against the Punahou 1AA team. The Vikings are looking for a repeat of the warm-up match.

This is the first time Santa Monica has ever participated in the Clash of the Titans Tournament and we all hope the invitation to play again next year is extended.

As someone once said earlier, it takes a village to move a bunch of teen-age boys from California to Hawaii.

I would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You! to all of the parents, chaperones, coaches, assistant coaches, athletic directors, grandparents, and siblings who all pitched in to make this a successful tournament and trip for the team. I would also like to say Thank You to Punahou High School and the Clash of the Titans Tournament for making the video feed available via the public Internet. Thank you for putting it out there. Thank you YouTube for keeping the Internet free and open.

Now, let’s play ball. The game is set to start at 5:00 pm HST / 8:00 pm PDT.

Thank you!

Earlier today, the Vikings lost in four set against the Chatsworth High School Team. Chatsworth took the first set, Santa Monica took the second, and Chatsworth won the third and fourth sets.

Mililani is a local Hawaiian team that is based in Mililani, Hawaii. Mililani is located on the island of Oahu and has a population of approximately 28,000 people.

The Vikings will be looking to redeem themselves after losing to Chatsworth. There are three pool play games which will determine who the Santa Monica team plays in tomorrow’s second game.

Tonight’s game begins at 8:00 pm PDT and 5:00 pm Local time. ThirdStreet.TV will cover the game live here.

Special Thanks to all the parents and people who sponsored the team and made this trip possible. MAHALO.

Watch the Community Organized Relief Effort (CORE) live telethon to help people affected by the Los Angeles wildfires https://3rdstreet.tv/watch-the-community-organized-relief-effort-core-live-telethon-to-help-people-affected-by-the-los-angeles-wildfires/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 18:47:45 +0000 https://3rdstreet.tv/?p=2184 SANTA MONICA – On the morning of January 7th, 2025, the Santa Ana winds blew forcefully across Southern California. While the residents in the area were aware of the potential for fire, nobody could have predicted the ferocity of the fire caused by the winds.

At approximately 11:00 am that morning, the fire began in the coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades. According to the Washington Post, the winds reached 90 MPH. Within hours the fire had consumed 10,000 acres and burned hundreds of homes. As the fire burnt overnight, the burn area would encompass more than 20,000 acres. The fire consumed and demolished an estimated 1,200 homes and commercial businesses and has caused an estimated U$D 250 billion in damage.

Several hours after the Pacific Palisades fire ignited, another firestorm erupted in Eaton, California – an incorporated city near Pasadena. This fire burnt overnight and more than 100,000 people were under orders to evacuate.

Fire Departments across California joined together and fought the blazes. According to Mayor Karen Bass’ office, as of today, the fire in Pacific Palisades is 75% contained and the Eaton fire is 95% contained.

But, the damage will be felt for years to come as government officials grapple with the loss of life, the displacement of 10’s of thousands of people, the financial loss, and the environmental impact.

CORE, Community Organized Relief Effort, will hold a live telethon today beginning at 9:00 am PDT. CORE, an non-profit organization has already raised over U$D 1 million that will be used to benefit impacted people and first responders, including the Los Angeles Fire Department and The California Fire Foundation.

So many people have been impacted by this tragedy. That is why actors, such as Josh Brolin and Internet talent and gamer, Jacksepticeye, have donated both time and money to help those affected by the Los Angeles wildfires.

L.A. Times Declares Santa Monica Restaurant as Having “Best Grilled Cheese in the Universe” https://3rdstreet.tv/l-a-times-declares-santa-monica-restaurant-as-having-best-grilled-cheese-in-the-universe/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 23:00:24 +0000 https://www.3rdstreet.tv/?p=1670 I could devote each week’s column to sandwiches without effort. There are too many variations, wonderfully creative abominations and utter masterpieces in this town to ignore for too long.

The players might differ, but certain elements should be present and sandwich rules followed. The bread, whether rye, Pullman, challah or baguette, needs to be fresh. It should be properly lubricated with the sauce, aioli, jam or spread of your choosing. And the construction, regardless of the middle components, needs to be sound ( i.e. don’t put wet tomatoes directly onto the bread, and try to get equal dispersal of stuff for optimum bites).

Croque Matthieu from Pasjoli

I recognize the many pitfalls of claiming anything is the best of whatever it is you’re talking about. It’s subjective. My best might not be your best. If the mood and setting are just right, anything can be the best. But I feel good throwing my weight behind what I deem to be the best grilled cheese sandwich in my universe.

It is the croque Matthieu on the bar menu at Pasjoli in Santa Monica.

During a recent visit, my party fell silent as we each bit into a square of the sandwich. The bread, annealed and shiny, was all crunch and butter. Then there was crispy Gruyère cheese, like a nutty, sharp cracker cemented to the inside of the sandwich. It shattered into a puddle of rich, creamy Mornay sauce that melted into sweet caramelized onions and shaved Bayonne ham.

The decadence of French onion soup, the simplicity of a good jambon beurre and the thrill of a gooey grilled cheese were all present, crammed into this four-bite sandwich. Its unabashed decadence something to marvel.

The sandwich is named for Mathew Kim, former chef de cuisine at the restaurant, who used to make a grilled cheese blanketed in Mornay sauce and a fried egg.

“Every now and then he would make a fancy grilled cheese kind of scenario,” chef-owner Dave Beran said during a recent call.

The sandwich made its way onto the Pasjoli lunch menu and was offered as a limited takeaway item, but it disappeared along with lunch service at the restaurant. When our restaurant critic, Bill Addison, tried Kim’s sandwich back in 2020, he wrote, “I went feral on this thing.”

Kim now runs a gourmet edibles company, but Beran recently brought back a version of the sandwich for the restaurant’s new bar menu.

He starts by cutting the top and bottom off of a baguette, then slicing it through the middle. He adds a heap of shredded Gruyère cheese to a nonstick pan. Once it’s melted and bubbly, he places the baguette slices onto the cheese, letting the two fuse together.

After the bread cools, he spreads a thick Mornay sauce onto the crispy cheese and adds a mound of jammy onions. They’re the same onions he features in the restaurant’s signature caramelized onion tart, cooked low and slow for six hours and finished with Madeira and sherry. He layers on slices of Bayonne ham, which taste like a combination of prosciutto and country ham, and closes the sandwich with another piece of baguette crusted with the melted Gruyère.

To finish the sandwich, he adds butter, shallot, garlic and thyme to a pan. Then he adds the sandwich to the pan, engulfing the entire thing in butter, basting it like a piece of Wagyu.

“We basically cook the sandwich like it’s a piece of meat,” Beran said. “It’s a pretty awesome sandwich.”

The croque Matthieu is only available on the bar menu, served until 7 p.m.
