SANTA MONICA – Local and community activities are the life blood of any place that you call home. The more engaged you are with the community, the more integrated and successful that community will be. They kids, parents, businesses, and residents all engage in these events to support our neighbors, friends, and community members.
Volleyball has a long and storied tradition in Southern California. Beach volleyball arguably started in SAMO and indeed, we have many former professionals and current professionals living in the community. Some great indoor players also live in SAMO and at times you can see them buying a morning coffee at Kafe K on Main Street or buying a pizza at The Santa Monica Pizza Kitchen on Wilshire and Euclid – the House is my favorite.
Boys High School volleyball season is happening now and watching the games online or in-person, are a great way to support our local athletes. The Vikings are going to play against the Palos Verdes Sea Kings in the brand spanking new gym on the high school campus tomorrow at 3:30 PM. This will be the third time the team has played in the new gym, since it was finished late last year.
During the pre-season warm-ups, the Vikings have played pretty well. Yesterday, they defeated Torrance in four sets. One player said, “Torrance was pretty tough, but we played well.” Sean, an outside hitter for the team had several impressive kills throughout the game.
Last weekend, at the Redondo / Mira Costa Tournament, the Vikings finished in 9th place after a strong start on Friday night. Overall, Coach Barraza was happy with the team’s performance. “It’s early and we’re still finding out how the teams plays together,” he said. “I’m confident that we’ll be ready for the regular season and am looking forward to participating in the CIF this year.”
Tonight, the team will be in Brentwood to play against Brentwood. The Brentwood team is led by Outside Hitter, Xander. He is a 6’4″ power hitter with an arm that is heavy as lead. About tonight’s game, Outside Hitter Colin said, “we might have to put an iron wall in front of Xander to stop him. But, our team is playing well together and we feel good about the upcoming game.”
